  • JAZZ IS PHSH

Celebrating The Music Of Phish Through The Lens Of Jazz

    ABOUT US

JAZZ IS PHSH is an instrumental tribute to Phish inspired by the popular tribute to The Grateful Dead, "Jazz is Dead". JAZZ IS PHSH is a collective of prominent musicians from the Jazz and Jam scenes that have come together in their appreciation of Phish music to reimagine Phish in an instrumental, jazz fusion setting!  The arrangements and performances of the band are built around their upcoming album which will feature many amazing musicians including Dennis Chambers (Santana, Miles Davis, Parliament Funkadelic), Jeff Coffin (Dave Matthews Band, The Flecktones), Chris Bullock (Snarky Puppy), Michael Ray (Sun Ra, Giant Country Horns, Cosmic Crewe), Kofi Burbridge (Tedeschi Trucks Band, Aquarium Rescue Unit, Trey Anastasio Band), Grant Green Jr. (Groove Masters),  Anthony Wellington (Victor Wooten Band), & many more!

Founded in 2015 by The Chase Brothers, Adam Chase and Matthew Chase, JAZZ IS PHSH has quickly become a world renown tribute to Phish, attracting some of the most influential musicians in the jazz and jam scenes to take part in this collective approach to paying tribute to one of the most important and influential bands in Rock and Roll history.

With the music of Phish being both largely improvised as well as highly composed, the framework of Phish's music is the perfect vehicle for exploring in an instrumental setting. The compositions are both challenging and adaptive. Jazz is Phish provides an exploration of Phish music unlike anything else.

    -----

"Phish is an American rock band noted for their musical improvisation, extended jams, blending of musical genres, and dedicated fan base. Formed at the University of Vermont in 1983 (with the current line-up solidifying in 1985), the band's four members—Trey Anastasio(guitars, lead vocals), Mike Gordon (bass, vocals), Jon Fishman (drums, percussion, vacuum, vocals), and Page McConnell (keyboards, vocals)—performed together for nearly 20 years before going on hiatus in August 2004. They reunited in March 2009 for a series of three consecutive concerts played in the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Virginia, and have since resumed performing regularly.

Phish's music blends elements of a wide variety of genres,[2] including rock, progressive rock, psychedelic rock, hard rock, funk, folk, jazz, and blues. Although the band has received little radio play or mainstream exposure, Phish has developed a large and dedicated following by word of mouth, the exchange of live recordings, and selling over 8 million albums and DVDs in the United States.[3] Rolling Stone stated that the band helped to "...spawn a new wave of bands oriented around group improvisation and super-extended grooves".[4] They remain a very popular and successful touring act.[5]" -Wikipedia

    Carl "Geerz" Gerhard

    Trumpet

When fans think of horns with Phish, they usually think of "Geerz."   A childhood friend of Page’s, Carl has shone as a guest artist during Phish concerts from 1988 to 2012.  He is an original member of both The Giant Country Horns and The Cosmic Country Horns and has also made several appearances during solo shows with Trey, Page, and Mike. His Phish contributions were immortalized on A Live One and the Hampton Comes Alive release, where he can be heard on “Cavern” and “Tubthumping.”

He recently finished a 30-yr career in the Navy Band, first as a performer, and ultimately, as director and conductor. He has led Navy Bands in the United States, Europe and the Far East, performed in over 20 countries, and has also conducted both the Tokyo Symphony and Boston Pops orchestras. He now lives in New England and free-lances extensively in jazz, dixieland, rock and reggae groups throughout the Boston, Providence and Newport areas.

In addition to his scheduled GCH and CCH appearances, Carl has put his twist on such horn-ready numbers as “Magilla” (2/8/91) and “Take the ‘A’ Train” (5/17/91), as well as such songs as “La Grange” (2/8/91). But many fans find his repeated work on “Cavern” and “Jesus Just Left Chicago” to be the most delicious of all." -via Phish.net
